Hamilton Houston
Hamilton - A Review
A modern-day reimagining of one of the Founding Fathers, Hamilton has become one of Broadway's most popular shows and continues to tour nationally. The show is based on a dense 818-page biography of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, and lyrically traces the life and times of this iconic American hero as it weaves a unique blend of hip-hop, rap, and R&B into the classic musical form. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the Tony Award-winning In the Heights, wrote the book and music for this innovative production. He was accompanied by an all-star Broadway cast that included Leslie Odom, Jr., Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff, and Okieriete Onaodowan.
The 'Hamilton' cast is a powerhouse from start to finish with every performance making me feel like I was surrounded by stars and the whole ensemble is a joy. This is the kind of show where you'll be wowed by how the cast is able to move and perform with such skill, it's like watching an artist sculpt a piece of art using their body alone.
I have to admit that this was a musical that I wasn't really expecting, especially as a musical theatre lover but I was very surprised with how well it all came together and worked. It's a very clever and adapted approach and it was a great joy to see this one make its way to the stage. It's not my first choice of the musical but it's a winner and a must-see for everyone.
It's a big and fast production, incredibly well-acted, and very much worth the ticket price. The whole thing is a treat to watch, the cast has so much energy and it is clear that they are genuinely enjoying themselves.
'Hamilton' has been a cult hit in New York for many years now and it's easy to see why. The original cast has won all kinds of awards including multiple Tonys, Grammys, and Oliviers. It's a must-see for anyone who is interested in history and the musical theatre genre.
The story is a little clunky at points but that's what makes it so interesting and memorable, you can't help but enjoy the way it plays out. It's a musical that isn't afraid to go where it wants and it will leave you wondering how they did it.
This is a musical that is very much about the lyrics and how they are delivered, it has a lot of very clever melodies and a good amount of humor throughout but it's the lyrics that really make the show. The words are very honest and they are not just fun, they have a serious message that is both entertaining and affecting.
If you have never seen this musical you should put it on your list of things to see, it's a must for all fans of musicals and hip-hop. It's also a must for any musical theater fan as it's very unique in how it tells this American story of a man who is not always portrayed as being the best person but has had to overcome a lot to make the country what it is today, it's a show that really needs to be seen, so do yourself a favor and get your tickets!
