The Astros were a National League team for the first fifty years of their existence. However, they switched to the AL in 1994. This change was controversial. Astros fans were disappointed by the move. In the mid-1990s, the owners almost sold the team to a businessman named William Collins. However, the owners fought to keep the team in Houston.
Until 2013, the Astros played at the Astrodome in Houston. It was the first domed sports stadium in the world. Unfortunately, the Astrodome's finances weren't very healthy. At one point, Astrodome's creditors were only interested in preserving the value of Astrodome's assets. The team's owners wanted to find a new home.
After a failed attempt to sell the Astros to Collins, the owners had to face the challenge of getting a new stadium. Their first stadium, the Astrodome, was called the Eighth Wonder of the World.
Although the Astros won their first game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013, they went on to lose the next three games in Los Angeles. That's when the Astros were moved to the AL West.
The Astros are currently led by ace pitcher Justin Verlander. He leads the team with a 1.38 ERA and 41 strikeouts. Martin Perez is also a strong pitcher for the Astros.
The Astros have been known for their great giveaways. Fans have received a variety of pins, jerseys, bobbleheads, and more. A promotional calendar was also created.
In the offseason, the Astros traded away a handful of their players. Tim Bydak wore an alternate white uniform with a brick red cap. Jason Lane was also traded to the Padres. Juan Gutierrez was traded to Arizona Diamondbacks. Jose Valverde was also traded.
After trading Carlos Correa to the San Diego Padres in July, the Astros acquired a few players in the offseason. The Astros signed Darin Erstad on December 27. Other players traded include Geoff Geary to the Philadelphia Phillies, Miguel Tejada to the Baltimore Orioles, and Brad Lidge to the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Astros advanced to the postseason for the first time in 1980. They swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in their first two playoff games at home, before losing the third game to the Dodgers. Since then, they have made six playoff appearances.
Houston Astros won the ALDS in 2010 and the World Series in 2017. Despite a 74-88 record in 2009, the Astros are one of the most successful teams in baseball. Currently, the team is ahead of the Yankees in the American League.
The Astros are set to face the Seattle Mariners in the 2022 ALDS. The winner of this series will advance to the ALCS. For the next three seasons, the Astros will play against all 29 MLB clubs.
