There are five live cougars who have served as mascots for the university. The logo for the cougars is minimalistic in style and represents the brilliance of the game.

The UH Cougars were a powerhouse in basketball in the 1980s. Their team was dubbed the "Phi Slama Jama" for their frenetic style of play. This was also the year of the first national ranking by the UPI.

Another famous player from the Phi Slama Jama was Clyde Drexler. He won one NBA Championship with the Washington Bullets in 1978. Drexler's team had a remarkable 31-3 record in 1982-1983.
